Determine source of water and confirm that it has
been stopped.

Remove
as much water as possible by any means possible (wet
vacuum, mop, blot, etc.).

Wipe
all surfaces dry, including furniture, cabinetry,
etc.

Remove
any materials that are obviously permanently water
damaged. (If filing an insurance claim, keep water
damaged personal property until your claims adjuster
instructs you on what to do with them.)

your insurance agent to request references of
service providers. Your agent will usually know
reputable contractors.

your insurance agent if you have coverage questions.

Use
dehumidifiers if available, even in the winter.

Use
your air conditioner in the summer to help remove
moisture from the air.

Use
fans to circulate the air and promote drying. The
more airflow, the better.

Remove
wet area rugs and debris.

Move
undamaged valuables and furnishings to a safe, dry
location.

Remove
fabrics (draperies, bedding, furniture skirting)
from wet carpet.

Remove
contents from wet boxes and spread them out to
facilitate drying.

Block/protect furniture legs from wet carpet with
wood blocks or aluminum foil.

Freeze
valuable books and documents until professional
drying can be performed.
