Water Damage Tips

Dos

  • Call DRS at 438-2379 for FREE advice.

  • Determine source of water and confirm that it has been stopped.

  • Remove as much water as possible by any means possible (wet vacuum, mop, blot, etc.).

  • Wipe all surfaces dry, including furniture, cabinetry, etc.

  • Remove any materials that are obviously permanently water damaged.  (If filing an insurance claim, keep water damaged personal property until your claims adjuster instructs you on what to do with them.)

  • Call your insurance agent to request references of service providers.  Your agent will usually know reputable contractors.

  • Call your insurance agent if you have coverage questions.

  • Use dehumidifiers if available, even in the winter.

  • Use your air conditioner in the summer to help remove moisture from the air.

  • Use fans to circulate the air and promote drying.  The more airflow, the better.

  • Remove wet area rugs and debris.

  • Move undamaged valuables and furnishings to a safe, dry location.

  • Remove fabrics (draperies, bedding, furniture skirting) from wet carpet.

  • Remove contents from wet boxes and spread them out to facilitate drying.

  • Block/protect furniture legs from wet carpet with wood blocks or aluminum foil.

  • Freeze valuable books and documents until professional drying can be performed.

Don'ts

  • Don't automatically tear out building materials such as carpet, padding, drywall and base trim.  They can usually be restored back to their "pre-moisture" condition.

  • Don't use electrical devices while standing on wet flooring.

  • Don't enter rooms with standing water if you haven't disconnected the electricity.

  • Don't disengage carpeting without professional help.  Disengaging wet carpet can damage seams and promote shrinking.

  • Don't underestimate the extent of water migration.  Water will typically migrate into carpet pad, walls and floor cavities far beyond where the carpet feels wet.

  • Don't leave a wet structure untreated.  Failing to quickly mitigate a water damaged structure can lead to significant structural damage.

  • Don't ignore mold odors that may result from not professionally drying the structure.
